TAURAI Mangwiro and Mkhuphali Masuku have rekindled their coaching relationship, signing for Harare City FC yesterday and are set to be officially unveiled at a function in the capital this morning. According to impeccable sources, Mangwiro and Masuku met Harare City FC’s management yesterday morning and sealed their deals.
It was not clear whether Harare City who survived relegation on the last day of the season after beating Chicken Inn 1-0 will have any room for Masimba Dinyero who was their caretaker coach.
“Mangwiro has been signed as Harare City FC coach together with his trusted lieutenant Mkhuphali Masuku. The two worked together at Caps United a few seasons back. They will formally be unveiled to the public tomorrow (today),” said the source.
Mangwiro’s appointment at Harare City puts to bed rumours that four-time championship winning coach with Dynamos Callisto Pasuwa will be heading to the Sunshine City Boys. Pasuwa will continue with his job as national Under-23 coach. There have been reports that Mangwiro was leading the race to take over from Pasuwa at DeMbare.
The professional attitude displayed by Mangwiro when he managed to psyche up his Caps United troops even when the club was facing dire times going for months without allowances and yet getting results impressed Harare City officials who decided to engage him.
The former Monomotapa and Caps United gaffer tendered his resignation letter at Caps United last week, amicably ending his relationship with the Green Machine with two years of his contract left.
Masuku was Mangwiro’s assistant at Caps United in 2012, spending six months with the former Cup Kings and taking over in the remaining matches of that campaign after the latter had thrown in the towel.
It was Masuku who led Caps United’s recruitment exercise at the beginning of 2013 but he didn’t last long, returning to Bulawayo before the season started.
In June 2013, Masuku joined Chicken Inn as assistant coach to Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu and two months later national team coach Ian Gorowa named the former Highlanders and AmaZulu utility player as one of his three deputies.
Repeated efforts to get comment from Mangwiro and Masuku last night were fruitless as their mobile phones were unreachable.
Meanwhile, Harare City sent invites to all media houses to attend today’s unveiling of their coaches.
“You’re all cordially invited to attend/cover the unveiling of Harare Football Club technical team tomorrow at 1000hrs at Harare House 14214 Tomlinson Drive, Gunhill. Transport leaves Town House at 0930hrs,” reads the invite.
After the Harare City’s capture of Mangwiro, the country’s big three – Dynamos, Highlanders and Caps United will also want to conclude their deals with prospective coaches before Christmas.
