Journalists have been encouraged to attend basic levels of football coaching training so that they have a better understanding of the game which will assist them in covering the sport.

The call was made by former Caps United and Harare City coach who is also a Caf instructor, Taurayi Mangwiro, when he presented a paper during a sportswriters’ workshop organised by the Premier Soccer League that kicked off here yesterday.

“I would like to urge you the media guys to do at least a Level One or even Two of football coaching so as to have a better understanding of the game,” said Mangwiro.

He was presenting a paper on the qualities of a good coach.

The former national team player spoke soon after some opening remarks by the league’s chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele who called on clubs to have clear plans of action.

“Clubs must have a plan, a clear one. Don’t come unprepared and probably that is the reason we have some clubs coming into the league, win the championship but get knocked out in the first hurdle in Caf competitions,” he said.

Ndebele said a good management system involves planning, organising, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting and budgeting.

“To run a football organisation effectively, club management must have conceptual skills, inter-personal and technical skills,” said Ndebele.

Today’s session will cover media operations, management of competitions and crowd management as well as the interpretation of the laws of the game.

Integrity in sport and fair play code presentations will mark the end of day two activity.

Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa this morning is expected to officially open the three-day workshop.
