Manica Post Editor receives male gender champion award

THE Manica Post Editor, Mr Cletus Mushanawani, was this afternoon awarded the prestigious Male Gender Champion accolade by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission for his exemplary commitment to gender-sensitive reporting.

The award was presented at the 2025 Male Symposium on Gender Equality held in Mutare.

The symposium attracted men from across sectors to reflect on their roles in driving gender equality both at home and in professional spaces.

Mr Mushanawani was recognised for using his editorial influence to amplify gender issues and promote balanced reporting that highlights the perspectives and experiences of both women and men.

In an interview, Mr Mushanawani said, “We are thrilled to receive this recognition for our efforts in promoting gender equality. This award motivates us to continue striving for a more inclusive and equitable society. This award is a testament to our commitment to promotd gender balance. We look forward to continuing our work in this area.”

Under his leadership, The Manica Post has consistently prioritised inclusive storytelling and advocated for gender equity across news coverage.

The event, convened by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, sought to empower men as active participants in building a more equal society, while also encouraging wellness and social engagement through sporting activities.

Certificates of recognition were handed out in nine categories to individuals and institutions contributing significantly to gender equality in Zimbabwe.

Speaking on behalf of ZGC Chairperson, Commissioner Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, Commissioner Jigu Katsande male gender champions are critical allies in the fight for equality as they help shift narratives, challenge harmful norms, and open doors for inclusive progress.

She also underscored the critical role men play in the journey toward gender equality while highlighting the Commission’s newly adopted strategy that places strong emphasis on male inclusion.

“As a Commission, we decided to take a multipronged approach to attaining gender equality in Zimbabwe. This approach highly prioritizes the engagement of men and boys as the other half of the population in achieving gender equality,” she said.
