Manicaland recommends heroine status for Mbuya Tangwena

Mbuya Tangwena, a renowned spirit medium, died at Parirenyatwa Hospital on Wednesday
Acting provincial chairperson Cde Dorothy Mabika confirmed the provincial recommendation yesterday.

“We met this afternoon (yesterday) and wrote our recommendations to the party leadership that Mbuya Tangwena be declared a national heroine.
“She played a critical role in the liberation of this country. And for that, we would want her to be declared a national heroine,” said Cde Mabika.

Zanu-PF national secretary for administration Cde Didymus Mutasa last night said he had not yet received the recommendations.
“I have not yet received that request in writing.
“I am just seeing this on television,” he said.

Mbuya Tangwena (82), died in Harare after suffering a respiratory ailment.
Cde Mabika said some of Mbuya Tangwena’s greatest and most memorable contributions during the struggle was the way she led a large group of naked women in protest against the colonial regime at the Nyanga district commissioner’s office in 1968.

“Mbuya Tangwena was an inspirational force during the struggle.
“You will recall she and her husband assisted President Mugabe and the late Cde Tekere to cross into Mozambique.

“She was also a spirit medium for the Tangwena people,” said Cde Mabika.
Central Committee member Cde Mandy Chimene said Mbuya Tangwena and her husband were famed for resisting eviction from Nyafaru after the Smith regime passed the racist Land Apportionment Act.

“She is a true hero. She saw and experienced all during the liberation struggle.
“She was the conduit of passage of war cadres into Mozambique.”
Mbuya Tangwena married Chief Tangwena in 1945.
