Manondo benefits from wing play

WILLIAM MANONDO says CAPS United’s effective wing play is helping him thrive more in front of goal.

The Green Machine chief striker had an erratic start to the season but he has raised the bar and now leads the Premiership’s scoring charts with eight goals after 17 games.

The 2022 Golden Boot winner was not as efficient as he usually is.

Last season he failed to defend his crown, which went to Ngezi Platinum Stars’ Takunda Benhura, who netted 13 goals.

But the former Harare City man is back to his efficient best and has strikingly got half of the goals through his head.

And he attributes that to Makepekepe’s relentlessness on the flanks.

CAPS United have some of the league’s best wingers in Junior Bunjira, Wayne Makuva, Tendai Matindife, and Phineas Bamusi.

“I normally thrive when I have good crossers of the ball around me.

“I am happy that coach Lloyd Chitembwe is bringing the best out of the impressive wingers that we have.

“I have scored four goals with my head out of the eight that I have so far this season,” said Manondo.

“I think as a striker, you should have that ability to know your strengths and work on maximising those strengths.

“I am always working on how to develop awareness. When the ball is on the flanks, I know how to time my runs and be in the right position. That’s how I do it.

“But I must thank coach Chitembwe for being patient with me and letting me improve the way I have done under his mentorship.”

Manondo has always scored several goals with his head with the ex-Warriors fringe striker heading in five of the seven goals he got last season.

He scored seven of the 17 goals he managed in 2022 with his head as well.

And he is looking to get some more and possibly win the Golden Boot for the second time in three years.

“We have very good players at CAPS United and what we want is consistency. I believe in my capabilities but obviously, I need to do more and try to achieve my targets,” added Manondo.

“But whatever I do, I do it for the team not for myself. For me, the team comes first.

“It’s not about William Manondo but it’s about CAPS United. So, it is the team that matters.

“We need to win accolades as a team, we need to make our fans happy and we can only do this by winning games.

“We have the right quality in the team and we should just do more to be able to win trophies.”

Manondo also has his coach Chitembwe’s full backing.

“William is a prolific striker and once he gets consistent in getting the goals like what he is doing, the team gets to benefit a lot,” said Chitembwe.

“I am happy for him because he is always trying to work hard and when you see him perfecting the art in the field of play, you know he is getting what he deserves.

“I like his attitude and his work ethic. Let me also highlight that this is what I like most about my players, all of them.”
