A MAN from Harare lost his bid to have his monthly child maintenance reduced from US$80 to US$40 at the Civil Court after the magistrate ruled that there were no significant changes in his circumstances.

Shane Kwereza had approached the court seeking a downward variation of the amount he has been paying to Elizabeth Musindo for the upkeep of their two children, aged 14 and 6.

Kwereza told the court that the maintenance figure was eating into his salary, leaving with very little to fend for his other family.

“I have another family that I take care of, and when I remove the US$80, I am only left with US$50,” he said.

However, Musindo opposed the application, arguing that the current US$80 was already insufficient to meet the children’s needs.

“The US$80 is still not enough as it doesn’t cover all expenses, and reducing it to US$40 will only make things worse,” she said.

Presiding magistrate Hannah Fazilahmed dismissed Kwereza’s application, saying there had been no material change in his financial situation to warrant a reduction.
