MANUNURE High School of Kwekwe will represent the Midlands province in the 2015 Stella Tea national netball competition after beating Vurasha Secondary of Mberengwa in a nerve wrecking final on Friday. Manunure beat Vurasha 24-20. Manunure had been given little chance against the Mberengwa school, which had earlier pipped the Kwekwe school 7-10 in the group stages.
goal shooter Cynthia Chigame helped Manunure with her massive 19 goals in the final.
In the group stages, the Kwekwe school dismissed Guinea Fowl of Gweru 12-6 and Cheziya 9-7 before losing to Vurasha.
chigame said she was happy to help her school to be crowned Midlands’ champions.
“I’m expecting to win the trophy for Midlands this time. We lost to Pamushana in the national finals and I hope this time we’re going to win the crown,” said the 16-year-old.
Young centre Tricia Sibanda was a marvel to watch in the tournament, and so was goal attacker Pertinia Mutsawu, goal defender Loice Sengwayo and Chigame.
Chigame went home $50 richer for scoring the most goals in the tournament while Mutsawu received $75 after being named player of the tournament and Sengwayo got $50 as reward for being the best goal defender.
Manunure coach Funani Nyamunda said his team “will be the team to beat” at the national finals to be held in Marondera on July 25.
