The flagship Harare–Beitbridge Highway rehabilitation project has reached a major milestone, with the completion of the Manyame River Bridge, a development expected to ease congestion, improve road safety and boost trade along one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.

The bridge, located along the Harare–Masvingo Highway, is set to be officially commissioned on April 27.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development said the project marks a significant step in the ongoing modernisation of Zimbabwe’s road network.

“Join us for the official opening of the Manyame River Bridge on the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Road — a key milestone in the ongoing modernisation of Zimbabwe’s transport infrastructure.

“This strategic development will enhance road safety, improve traffic flow and facilitate efficient trade and mobility along this vital corridor,” the Ministry said.

The Manyame River Bridge is a critical component of the broader Harare–Beitbridge Highway rehabilitation project, a key north–south trade route linking Zimbabwe to regional markets.

In Masvingo, construction of the Mucheke River Bridge is also nearing completion.

The bridge forms part of the Masvingo urban bypass and is expected to improve traffic flow within the city while strengthening regional connectivity and supporting local economic development.

The Ministry said the bridge projects are part of a wider national drive to modernise transport infrastructure and improve efficiency along key trade routes.

Meanwhile, a 7,3km stretch of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Road near Ngundu in Mwenezi District has recently been opened to traffic, as work continues on the dualisation of a 16km section along the Ngundu Escarpment.

This section forms part of the broader upgrading of the Harare–Beitbridge Highway, which includes the construction of a four-lane dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction to improve safety, reduce travel time and facilitate the smooth movement of passengers and freight.
