ZIMBABWE triple jumper Chengetayi Mapaya has started the indoor season with a flying 16.85m jump at the Oklahoma University Classic to set a new indoor world lead for the season.
The jump sent Mapaya to number one in the world rankings and reignited hopes of a major medal in 2026.
“I am grateful for the way my season has started, securing the current number one in the world and flying the Zimbabwean flag,” said Mapaya.
The performance also earned him automatic qualification for the World Indoor Championships in Poland, set for 20–22 March.
Mapaya finished seventh at last year’s World Athletics Championships and believes this season offers a stronger medal opportunity.
“I am really eyeing a medal this year. After last year’s finish, it was important to start strongly,” he said.
Regularly ranked inside the world’s top 20, Mapaya’s journey has been defined by perseverance.
Based in the United States, he balances being a student and full-time worker while competing at the highest level.
Nicknamed “Du Airlines” for his explosive jumps, he has often done it the hard way.
“I have gone nearly three years with no coach and very little support. Sometimes it feels like I give everything without seeing the returns, but that hasn’t stopped me,” he said. Despite funding challenges, Mapaya has delivered notable results, including silver at the African Senior Championships and being a two-time NCAA Champion.
The 16.85m jump is his season’s best, though still short of his personal best of 17.26m set four years ago.
“I can reach greater heights with more support. Athletes need consistent competition exposure and backing. When that comes, the results will show,” he said.
Mapaya now turns his focus to Poland, where he hopes to rubber stamp his authority.
