ZIMBABWE Junior Golf Association president Brian Maphosa will not stand for re-election on Monday after serving two terms at the helm. Maphosa feels he has played his part.
“I will not be standing in for re-election as President of Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association at the elections to be held next week after serving my two terms,” Maphosa said in a statement.
“I feel I have made my small contribution to the development of junior golf in the country and it is time to pursue other interests.”
Maphosa started as a committee member in 2010 and then held the position of vice-president before he took over as the leader.
The elections will be held at a special general meeting.
“I am very satisfied with the growth of our junior golfers, but it’s work in progress that the new team has to continue with,” said Maphosa.
“I am also happy that we have achieved a respectable status in junior golf circles globally. This is demonstrated by the invitations to various tournaments we get as a country which, of course, we have to be very selective about as we do not necessarily have the resources to cover them all.
“One area that’s still disappointing is that of corporate support for such sports as golf. We get the support we need for our current needs, but more is needed to make golf affordable even to the less privileged.
He also highlighted the lack of support for the girls’ tournaments at junior level.
“Participation of girls in golf is also unacceptably too low. These are basically some of the challenges that still need to be attended to,” Maphosa said.
