Marange Resources are the sponsors of today’s tournament that tees off at Hillside in Mutare.
The Marange Resources pro-am becomes the third tournament of the season and has a US$30 000 purse, which makes it among the top professional tournaments in the tour.
“We are very happy to be associated with the Marange Resources brand.
“The tour is improving with each passing day and we will work hard to lure some more sponsors for the gentleman’s game.
“We are growing and hopefully the tournaments will increase both in competition and in numbers this season,” Mahachi said.
The tournament tees off this morning with a total of 66 professionals taking to the field.
Last year’s order of merit winner Ignatius Mketekete will be looking forward to continue from where he left last season when he takes to the field. Mketekete won four
of the 11 tournaments that were played last season, which also saw him becoming the one to beat in most tournaments. Mketekete will however, not have it easy as the tournament has several golfers who are eager to win.
Robson Saurombe will be returning to the course, where he started his career and remains in contention.
Saurombe was competitive last year missing the Lowveld pro-am through playoffs and won a tournament with several top five finishes. The other players to look forward to will be the seasoned Tongoona Charamba who will be looking forward to maintaining his status as the country’s top golfer.
Charamba fired the warning shots by winning the Mashwede Diesel Open at Falcon and was the best local in the Zimbabwe Open.
Ryan Cairns fresh from winning his maiden Sunshine Tour tournament will be in for the challenge as well as Shane Pringle.
Four South African’s Big Easy Tour (BET) players Alpheus Kalapile, Elvis Sithebe, Thanda Mavundla, and Warren Howard will take part in the event and improve the
competition. Lyford Yadyo, Phillip Tshuma, Day Muyambo, Titch Masemburi, Peter Banda among several top professionals will tee off at the improved Hillside course.
The tournament will have amateurs taking to the field and the sponsors said they have put some good prizes for them. Amateur golf has become competitive and is no longer easy to predict as new champions emerge in several tournaments. Bernard Magaso who was expected to turn professional but will have to wait for three more months can also make it on a good day. The field will also see Hillside captain Martin Nyaundi willing to see a winner from his club. The field carries a capacity of 120 players and more could not secure places and the amateurs may not feel hard done as they will travel to the same course next week for the Hillside Masters and as it will be game on as usual.
