Harare-based songstress Cynthia Mare is still shattered by her mother’s death. She broke down during an interview yesterday saying she did not get time to speak to her late mother before she died. Mare who was in Bulawayo for a performance over the weekend said her album Dai Zvaibvira —Zuva Rimwe was dedicated to her late mother, Enita Charewa Chamboko who died two years ago after a long struggle with bone cancer.
One of the songs on the album Zuva Rimwe — a sad but melodic tune — is a cry by Mare for one more chance to tell her mother how much she appreciated her.
“I composed Zuva Rimwe two days after my mother’s funeral. Before she died, I was in the UK when I got a phone call that she was seriously ill. I immediately flew to Zimbabwe and when I landed, my mother had slipped into a coma and died days after.
“I didn’t have time to speak to her and say goodbye,” she said before breaking down during the interview.
Mare then asked to be given time to recover and during that moment, she wrote on her Facebook page: “I broke down and started crying when I was talking about my song Zuva Rimwe and why I sang it.
“I don’t usually cry but now I can’t stop crying. Guess you never really get over losing your mom. Of course I know she’s now resting and God took her back for a good reason. Miss u mom.”
Thereafter messages of encouragement poured in from friends and fans on her wall. Mare said she had not cried in two years and could not explain how emotions got the better of her during the interview.
“I normally can speak freely about her death during any interview, but I do not know what happened to me. Music for me is my therapy that is why I wrote that song for my mother. I was really expressing my feelings on that track,” she said.
Turning to her career, Mare said she was working on a new album to be released in December.
“I am working on my new album and I have already recorded four tracks. The name of the album is not yet out, but one of the songs has a theme that encourages girls and women to keep fighting and working hard to achieve their goals,” she said.
Mare said she appreciated the support she got from fans in Bulawayo during the show with South African songstress Zahara last Saturday.
Before her performance, the songstress had promised to show Zimbabweans that there were artistes as talented as Zahara locally and she did not disappoint, as she did just that as her act was even better than Zahara’s.
After the show, Mare sold her album for a $1 per copy and she managed to sell over 70 copies.
“My manager and I were counting the number of CDs that we sold and we got above $70. This was great for me as it showed people in Bulawayo appreciate my music considering that it was my first time to perform in the city,” she said.
Asked why she had sold her CDs for a dollar, Mare said it was because she wanted everyone who had watched her perform to get a copy.
She added that she believed Bulawayo had abundant talent and would love to work with one of the artistes on her upcoming album.
“I would love to work with a Bulawayo artiste on my forthcoming album as there is so much talent there. People in Harare know that if you want real talent, you go to Bulawayo,” she said.
Mare said she planned to have collaborations with Oliver Mtukudzi, Hugh Masekela and Zahara.
