Marinica turns to new blood as Warriors clash with Bots

THE Warriors are set to kick off their Mukuru Four Nations Tournament campaign this evening, stepping into the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown for a semi-final clash against hosts Botswana that promises the spark, tension and excitement worthy of a regional showdown.

With the final set for March 31, the tournament arrives at a perfect moment — a timely platform for the senior Zimbabwe football national team to test their combinations, refine their tactical identity and give fringe players a stage big enough to seize.

For coach Marian Marinica, however, the build-up has not been without its complications.

A string of injuries has ruled out several key names, with Tawanda Maswanhise, Prince Dube, Thando Ngwenya and Knowledge Musona all unavailable. Yet the Romanian remains composed, focusing not on what he has lost but on what the situation may open up.

“It’s unfortunate we have had a few players who were unable to join the squad because of injury, and that is always disappointing.

“You want every player to be available, but this is part of football and we have to adapt quickly and responsibly. At the same time, the situations create opportunities for others to come in and show their quality.

“The players who have been called up have been doing well at their clubs, and this is a valuable chance for us to assess them in the national team environment.

As a technical team, we are always thinking about building depth and competition within the squad. Moments like these help broaden our options and strengthen the group moving forward,” Marinica said.

The tournament, running from March 28 to 31, lands in the afterglow of a historic Southern African performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Six nations — Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Angola and Zambia — all qualified for the finals, a statement of intent from a region long regarded as underdogs.

Now, with momentum shifting and belief swelling, the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament becomes more than a friendly competition — it is a chance to keep Southern Africa’s resurgence alive and to mould the next layer of regional stars.

Sponsored by Fintech Company Mukuru, the event also showcases deliberate investment into football’s long-term future in the region.

Mukuru, which has partnered with global clubs such as Crystal Palace in the UK and supported athletes like Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers and South African cricket star Temba Bavuma, sees this tournament as part of a larger mission: building a sustainable, competitive regional football ecosystem that nurtures talent and elevates the sport’s standing.

On the pitch, the Warriors carry a mix of experience and promise. Veterans such as Marvelous Nakamba and Teenage Hadebe bring leadership, calm and composure — essential ingredients in any international contest.

Alongside them, fresh faces will have the chance to rise, to impress, to prove that they belong in national colours.

For many, this competition will be a proving ground; for the coaching staff, it is an opportunity to refine tactical partnerships, experiment with new combinations and deepen their squad ahead of future international commitments.

Tonight’s match marks the start of yet another chapter in the Warriors’ rebuild — one written with ambition, resilience and the unmistakable hunger to reclaim their place among Africa’s most formidable teams.
