ROMANIAN Marian “Mario” Marinica’s appointment may have sparked mixed reactions among the Zimbabwe football family but ZIFA believe the ex-Malawi and Liberia gaffer deserves both patience and a chance as he goes through his Warriors adventure.
Marinica will immediately plunge into official duties next week when the Warriors date Algeria and Qatar in international friendly matches.
The two matches against the Desert Foxes and the Maroons will give a glimpse of the kind of approach Marinica will take ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco next month.
Marinica’s Algerian counterpart Vladimir Petković yesterday announced a 27-man strong Desert Foxes squad dominated by foreign-based players.
Both Zimbabwe and Algeria will use their showdown as part of their respective preparations for the Nations Cup in Morocco next month.
Algeria and Qatar have booked their tickets to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
While questions have naturally been raised over his record in Africa — as coach of Malawi and Liberia — which does not inspire confidence, ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi noted that the Romanian needed to be given time and space before he could be judged on his performance with the Warriors.
“The appointment of Coach Mario Marinica, like every strategic decision we have made, was based on technical merit, vision alignment, and data, not public sentiment. Coach Marinica’s philosophy mirrors ZIFA’s vision of growth and sustainable football development,” said Magwizi.
A highly-accomplished UEFA Pro Licensed coach, Marinica brings over 25 years of international coaching and technical experience across four continents-Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.
Marinica has worked with several prestigious clubs and national teams including Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco, Liverpool FC, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as the Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi and Liberia national teams.
Although he holds the distinction of guiding the Flames of Malawi to the historic qualification of Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in 2021, his overall stay was disappointing after winning only two games during his tenure.
He has also struggled with Liberia, who finished bottom of their Afcon qualifying group, winning just once in six matches.
However, Magwizi believes circumstances differ. “It is irrational to judge a coach solely by past win ratios without examining context, that’s the teams, resources, opposition, and the development stage of the national program.
“Leadership must rise above emotional outbursts to see the broader picture, and that broader picture is one of rebirth through knowledge, planning, and structure,” said Magwizi.
Marinica has been mandated to raise the bar for Zimbabwe at AFCON as the Warriors make a sixth appearance.
Different coaches have failed to progress from the group stage at the tournament.
It will, however, not be easy as none of their Group B opponents can be said to be easy.
Zimbabwe have been pitted against familiar foes at the AFCON 2025 finals where they will open their campaign against record seven-time African champions Egypt in Agadir on December 22.
Angola’s Palancas Negras will be their next opponents in Marrakech before a massive COSAFA derby clash against South Africa ensues in Casablanca. The international friendlies against Algeria and Qatar will now help Marinica to familiarise with his players.
