MANICALAND Quiz giants Nyanga High School outshined themselves earlier this week when they scooped the first prize for the 2015 National High Schools HIV and AIDS quiz competition held in Harare.
The Boys High School popularly known as Marist Brothers was all smiles as they received their prize, a generator, public address system, digital camera, e-book reader, trophy, winner’s medals for each of the winning participants, laptop and a projector.
For the province of Manicaland, this comes after St Faith’s High school also scooped the same trophy for two consecutive years, which are 2012 and 2013.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Sylvia Utete-Masango who officiated at the event said that the occasion was now a permanent feature in the school calendar.
“The Ministry is excited that the HIV and AIDS subject is now examinable from Grade 3 up to tertiary level and because of this as a Ministry want to mark the event to be held annually on the school calendar,” she said.
The competitions were a culmination of the competitions that started at district level. Following the national competitions, Marist High had won the ticket to represent Manicaland province after outclassing seven schools at the provincial competitions. The three levels of competitions were funded by National AIDS Council and the objective of this annual event is to capacitate school pupils on Life Skills education, HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health. Speaking at the handover ceremony, the School Headmaster Mr Clement Nyamandwe said he was excited by his boys’ performance and promised NAC of another resounding victory in the next competition.
