Harare City Council has announced plans to partner Road Port (Pvt) Ltd to upgrade the Market Square Bus Rank.
The move is expected to cater for increased number of commuter omnibuses.
According to council’s business committee minutes of December 15, Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said it was Road Port (Pvt) Ltd that came up with the business proposal.
Dr Mahachi reported that Road Port (Pvt) Ltd proposed to construct a parkade link to cater for growth both in terms of business and number of commuters, read the minutes.
This development is set to include construction of a 12-floor building with three basements with 5 717 square metres gross floor area accommodating 134 vehicles for office occupants and pre-paid parking.
In the ground floor, there will be a shopping area and a rank that accommodates 36 buses.
The first and second floor will comprise a shopping area and a commuter bus rank to accommodate 82 vehicles.
The third floor will consist of a shopping and flea market area, with the fourth up to the eleventh floors comprising offices.
The committee noted that the company was the one with current operations at the Fourth Street Road Port and wanted to confirm that their current businesses were beneficial to the council, read the minutes.
The committee then requested for the agreement between City of Harare and the company to establish whether such conditions had been complied with and also whether the company was up to date with its council bills.
The committee requested time to digest the matter.
