Marondera Municipality has started allocating residential stands to beneficiaries of the Elmswood Housing Project, bringing joy to those who have been on the waiting list for some time.

The 480 hectares land of Elmswood area will have mixed density. In a statement on Thursday, the local authority said those who are being allocated have reached the 30 per cent payment threshold.

“The Municipality of Marondera today commenced allocating Elmswood Housing Project stands to beneficiaries who have reached the 30 percent payment threshold. The council will implement a phased stand allocation process until all the beneficiaries who would have paid their 30 per cent threshold are allocated stands.

“Council will continue to contact and allocate to all beneficiaries who reached the 30 per cent payment threshold. Council is following due process in delivering the Elmswood Housing Project to avoid dysfunctional settlements as per the dictates of the Government’s National Human Settlement Policy,” reads the statement.

Marondera Municipality town clerk Mr Rinashe Nyamuzihwa said about 200 people benefited and more will follow soon since they are allocating in batches. He went on to say all the necessary procedures have been followed hence the allocation process

“We were given this land by the Government in 2015 for residential stands for the beneficiaries in Marondera who do not have anywhere to stay. The land is more than 300 hectares. We are allocating the stands today after we have done all the procedures required of us including the layout plan. Also, our surveyors completed work last month to pave the way for the allocation

“We are allocating in batches. Today, we are giving about 200 people.

“In 2015 we gave offer letters to 2800 people and these are the people who will be allocated in batches. We have high medium and low densities.

These are the people who are supposed to benefit. So this is what we are doing today,” he said.

Meanwhile, officers from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) recently arrested five people from Marondera on allegations of defrauding people of more than US$200 000 of their hard-earned money after promising them residential stands at Elmswood farm.

The five have since appeared in court and three of them have been granted bail while the other two are still in custody.
