MARONDERA Municipality has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media platforms alleging that the council is planning to dismiss some contract workers on political grounds.
In a statement, the council said the circulating messages are being peddled by unknown people with the intention to damage the reputation of the local authority.
“Council notes with concern, a sourceless message that has gone viral on some social media platforms alleging that council intends to dismiss some contract workers based on political grounds. The municipality wishes to vehemently dismiss such claims with the contempt that they deserve.
“The messages are being peddled by unknown individuals with the intention to damage and discredit the reputation of council,” reads the statement.
Council went on to say that Marondera municipality was a law-abiding entity and operated within the confines of the law.
“Council is guided by the Labour Act and other applicable laws in its recruitment, selection and employment of workers either on a permanent or contract basis. Council wishes to clarify that employees employed on fixed term contracts do not have guarantees on contract renewal.
“Contract renewal is subject to a variety of conditions including but not limited to the availability of funds, existing demand for labour so if a project is complete then no additional labour is needed, and employee performance.
“In this regard, council is guided accordingly as per the prevailing labour conditions within the organisation.”
The municipality went on to urge the public to always seek information from council officials and not from outsiders.
“The municipality would like to urge members of the public to disregard all messages that makes unsubstantiated and malicious allegations against council. The public is encouraged to seek authentic council information only from verified council social media handles or from council officials.
“The Municipality of Marondera remains committed to adhering to the highest standards of fair labour practices as prescribed by the Labour Act and the Constitution of the Republic of Zimbabwe.”
Meanwhile, Marondera mayor Councillor Chengetai Murowa has urged Marondera residents to always participate in monthly clean up programmes and ensure the town remains clean.
Clr Murowa made the remarks during a clean up exercise held at Nyameni business centre recently.
“I call upon everyone here to spread the gospel of cleanness. A clean environment is a healthy environment.”
