Marooned truckers rescued

Beitbridge Bureau

Two men managed to escape from their Nissan truck when it was swept away as they were crossing Mtshabezi River in the Siyoka area, but they had to spend some hours in trees in the middle of the river.

Villagers managed to contact the Civil Protection Unit, who sent a boat to rescue the two. The duo managed to get out of the truck after they took a chance and tried to cross the river, which was rising rapidly in flood on their way to Madzivhe area, 100km west of Beitbridge town. One of the villagers who alerted the authorities, Mr Morris Mhlanga, said: “We had to urgently call for help and monitor the two. We were worried the trees would be swept away with water levels continuing to rise.”

Beitbridge District Civil Protection Unit chairperson Mrs Sikhangezile Mafu Moyo said the rescue team had to use a boat to rescue the two men.
