Married lovers trapped in love nest

DANGAMVURA residents were on Monday treated to a free mid-morning drama when an elderly married man was allegedly caught red-handed with his married lover by his in-laws.

It is alleged that the man, who only identified himself as Chikara (his actual surname is Chikuni) when The Weekender caught up with him, had been having an affair with the unnamed Chikanga woman for the past two years.

Residents in the Two Rooms section of the suburb bayed for the two cheats’ blood.

However, they were stopped by Mai Chikuni who dispersed the mob and opted to solve her differences with her husband amicably behind closed doors.

“Chikuni’s in-laws saw him ushering the woman inside his house just after his wife had left for work. They knocked on the door, but no one opened it. Their endless knocks on the door attracted the attention of neighbours and passers-by.

“Chikuni’s wife, who is a teacher at a private school in town, was called and she rushed back home. She dispersed everyone while telling us to mind our business, but we all knew what was happening,” said Chipo Maruta, a local resident.

Another resident who requested anonymity said Chikuni’s in-laws wanted instant justice since they believe their daughter is the one taking care of the family, including the unemployed Chikuni.

“The crowd gathered because Chikuni’s in-laws were baying for his blood. They wanted to assault him as they felt disrespected because their daughter is the breadwinner, while Chikuni brings in lovers to their matrimonial home.

“They (the in-laws) live across the Chikunis’ house and they saw everything. Chikuni failed to handle this issue as a man, and that’s why we called his wife to see what was happening behind her back.

“However, his wife did not do us justice as she just dispersed us and pretended as if nothing had happened,” she said.
Residents who talked to Chikuni’s lover claimed that she told them that she did not know that he was married.

“The lover said she is married and stays in Chikanga. She also said she thought Chikuni was single as that is what he told her,” said another resident, Lucia Mungwari.

When The Weekender caught up with Chikuni late Monday afternoon, he denied that the woman he had been caught with was his lover. He said they are friends.

“There is no story there. People just did not understand my situation. Honestly, why do you think my wife did not attack or shout at the woman when she was called to come back home? It means she knew what was happening, the woman is not my lover.

“Do not listen to my neighbours, they love drama. My wife is okay with what happened, so why should they start to stir all this up?”
