IT is not looking good for Zimbabwe international Marshal Munetsi after Wolves suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League yesterday.
Munetsi’s header in half-time stoppage time was in vain as Wolves still lost 2-3 to Burnley, leaving them as the only team yet to record a win this season.
The 2025/26 season has been a stark contrast to the end of last season when they ended on a flying note.
For Munetsi yesterday’s defeat will be more painful as it also came from one of the Warriors’ bitter rivals star, Bafana Bafana’s Lyle Foster.
Foster’s 95th-minute winner earned Burnley their first away victory of the season to leave Wolves win-less and rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.
The substitute struck late just as it looked like Wolves had earned a point after fighting back from 2-0 down.
Zian Flemming’s first-half double put the Clarets in charge, but Jorgen Strand Larsen’s penalty and Munetsi’s header hauled the hosts level before the break.
Wolves were unable to capitalise on their momentum, and fans again turned on executive chairman Jeff Shi and owners Fosun.
They vented their anger after Flemming’s opener — a brilliantly taken first-time volley — and following his second, with few signs of recovery in sight.
But when Josh Cullen kicked Santiago Bueno, Strand Larsen scored from the spot and Wolves had hope, with Munetsi levelling in first-half stoppage time.
At full-time Wolves fans and players looked to be having a heated discussion while the home supporters chanted “sacked in the morning” towards manager Vitor Pereira. The result might have been different, with Jhon Arias’ free-kick hitting the bar as the home side tried to complete their fightback in the second half.
Martin Dubravka’s late save from Bueno helped earn Burnley’s victory — their first on the road in the Premier League since April 2024 — which lifts them to 16th and five points above the relegation zone.
It is the first time Wolves fans have turned on Pereira.
And for Munetsi, it could be an emotional moment as he battles to try and save the manager who has trusted him all the way since his arrival at Wolves.
At the end of a disastrous defeat the manager endured brief, but noticeable, “sacked in the morning” chants from the supporters who are out of patience with their club.
Pereira went to the local Wetherspoons after victories last season, coining the phrase “first the points, then the pints”, and had a strong bond with the fans.
But after a ninth game without a win supporters have had enough, having also vented their anger towards Shi and Fosun.
The executive chairman and owners are regular targets and Wolves’ decline this season looks like it could be terminal.
They are bottom and six points from the safety line, having failed to beat newly promoted Sunderland and Burnley in successive games.
Having sold Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri in the summer they are devoid of spark and after several near misses with relegation, there is a real fear this season will be the one when they finally drop.
