ONE of Zimbabwe’s top endurance athletes, Martin Mbofana, has qualified for the World Duathlon Championships in Ottowa, Canada, this month but will not be able to fly the Zimbabwe flag there unless he can gets sponsorship for his airfare. Mbofana (38) recently came eighth in the African Duathlon Championships in South Africa, the top Zimbabwean competitor, in a world qualifying time, but now needs US$2 600 to get himself and his bicycle to Canada plus US$400 to supplement his own savings for accommodation and other expenses.
A duathlon comprises a 10km run, a 40km bike ride and a 5km run.
Mbofana uses the South Africa Two Oceans and Comrades ultra-marathons as “endurance training”.
Triathlon Zimbabwe president Rick Fulton has given the association’s backing to Mbofana’s sponsorship effort and a travel account has been opened at One Sky Travel.
At present Mbofana has no corporate sponsor, so all the allowed sponsorship logo positions on his kit are available.
He mostly funds himself for events in South Africa, although Windmill Zimbabwe helped with US$400 for the African Championships but are now facing their own problems. Mbofana can be contacted on [email protected] and Triathlon Zimbabwe on [email protected].
