Visual artist and choreographer White Maruta is appealing for sponsorship to enable him to represent the country at the prestigious World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) set for the United States between July 13-21.

Maruta, a Harare-based artist renowned for his unique ability to paint while dancing, has been selected to represent Zimbabwe at the international competition after an impressive performance at the International Art Talent Showcase in South Africa, where he won a gold medal against competitors from 54 countries.

Often referred to as the “Talent Olympics,” WCOPA brings together aspiring performers from more than 60 countries to compete in categories including singing, dancing, acting, modelling, instrumental performance and variety arts.

Despite earning the opportunity to showcase Zimbabwean talent on one of the world’s biggest artistic stages, Maruta faces financial challenges that threaten to cancel his participation.

“I have been given a chance to fly the Zimbabwean flag high on a global platform, but I urgently need sponsorship to cover visa processing, registration fees, accommodation, air tickets and travel expenses for myself and my coach,” said Maruta.

He believes supporting his journey goes beyond helping an individual artist.

“This is an investment in Zimbabwean creativity, youth talent and national pride. With support from sponsors, our country’s flag can be proudly represented on the world stage,” he said.

Maruta said his journey shaped by his determination.

He said as self-taught mixed-media artist, Maruta rose to prominence through realistic portraits and innovative live performances that combine painting and dance.

He said his passion for art deepened following the loss of his mother, a difficult period that inspired him to pursue his talent more seriously.

In addition to winning gold in South Africa, Maruta has previously received nominations for outstanding performances at the World Championships of Performing Arts, highlighting his growing reputation on the international arts scene.

Through his artwork, Maruta seeks to celebrate Zimbabwean culture while fostering connections across borders.

“Art is a powerful tool that transcends language and cultural barriers. Through my work, I aim to inspire people, provoke thought and contribute to global conversations about creativity and artistic expression,” he said.

His portraits often focus on notable Zimbabwean personalities and social themes encouraging national dialogue while showcasing local talent to international audiences.

Maruta is now inviting companies, organisations and individuals to partner with him through sponsorship opportunities.

He is open to collaborations that include brand visibility through promotional campaigns, acknowledgements during performances and other mutually beneficial partnerships.

“The support will not only help me participate at this prestigious event but will also demonstrate a commitment to the arts, cultural exchange and community development,” he said.
