MARUWA FAVOURITE FOR GONG

THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Coach of the Month for October will be announced today with TelOne gaffer, Herbert “Jompano” Maruwa, a huge favourite.

Maruwa and Chegutu Pirates coach Maxwell Jongwe are the only coaches who won the two PSL matches that were played in October.

While Jongwe masterminded wins over defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars and lowly Bikita, Maruwa’s wins were slightly of bigger magnitude.

TelOne also beat Madamburo at Ascot before stunning Chicken Inn at Luveve on Match Day 30.

That was Chicken Inn’s first loss at Luveve this season.

This puts Maruwa as a huge favourite to land the October Coach of the Month award.

Maruwa has been enjoying his stay in the Midlands capital where he weaving his magic at the WIFI Boys.

TelOne have won their last four matches and are now six points above the relegation zone.

They also now just six points behind Chicken Inn, who occupy eighth position.

“Now that we are out of the relegation zone, we should keep fighting. We could end up fighting for top eight, which I think is very possible,” Maruwa told Zimpapers Sports yesterday.

TelOne registered the biggest win of the season when they thrashed Bikita Minerals 6-1 at Ascot on September 25 .

They have gone to beat Chegutu Pirates, Ngezi Platinum Stars and Chicken Inn.

Maruwa might have a modest 50 percent success rate since taking over at TelOne, but the youthful coach has done justice to his appointment.

TelOne were grappling with relegation worries when Maruwa replaced Tendai Chikuni on May 16.

The WIFI Boys had managed one win, five losses and three draws in their opening nine matches.

But they are now 10th on the log with 38 points and just four below the top eight.

So remarkable has been TelOne’s rise that they are now just a point behind Dynamos and just six behind fifth placed Highlanders.
