MASEKESA JOINS ENGLISH CLUB

LAST year, some Zimbabwean cricket fans were left fuming after leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa was surprisingly left out for the historic Test against England.

It came just days after his dream debut against Bangladesh, where he picked five wickets, offering Zimbabwe a rare quality leg-spin option.

The decision by Zimbabwe Cricket to pick left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza instead, has left supporters baffled.

“A leg spinner gets a fifer on Test debut, then gets left out as the selectors choose to go with an overrated, innocuous left-arm spinner,” said cricket commentator Dean Du Plessis.

“It will be up to you to interpret what that means. Conditions may be different, but surely players should be rewarded when they perform?”

Now, Masekesa is going to England.

He has been signed by an English club, Caldy.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Zimbabwean International, Vincent Masekesa for the 2026 season. Welcome to Caldy, Vincent,” the club announced.

The club describes itself as a “friendly, sociable, and inclusive cricket club.”

Vincent Masekesa, born on March 27, 1997, is known for his crafty leg-spin bowling and handy lower-order batting.

Last year was a breakthrough year for him.

Emerging from a stellar domestic season as the Logan Cup’s leading wicket-taker, Masekesa made an instant impact on his Test debut for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

The 28-year-old Mountaineers player delivered a memorable performance, etching his name in the nation’s cricket history by becoming only the third Zimbabwean to claim a five-wicket haul on his Test debut.

The rare feat put him in the company of Andy Blignaut and John Nyumbu. Despite the team’s defeat, Masekesa’s performance caught the eye, earning praise from Chevrons’ head coach Justin Sammons for his remarkable debut.

“The standout or the big takeaway from this game for us would be Vincent Masekesa’s performance. On debut, to go and do what he did was really pleasing to see. He showed real character, and we are excited about that,” said Sammons.
