ZIMBABWE Original Rhythms of Africa music torchbearer, and musician, Clayton Masekesa, is enjoying a remarkable wave of success following the release of his latest patriotic single — Happy Independence Zimbabwe.

Officially launched on April 10, the song has resonated deeply with listeners across the country and the Diaspora, capturing the spirit of Zimbabwe’s Independence month with both heart and harmony.

The vibrant track, which pays tribute to the country’s hard-won independence celebrated each year on April 18 is enjoying heavy rotation on major radio stations including Diamond FM and Radio Zimbabwe.

It has also gained traction as a social media jingle shared widely in celebration of national pride.

“This is a heartfelt dedication to all Zimbabweans. It is a call for unity and collaboration, and a reflection of our rich cultural heritage and unwavering resilience as a people. I am glad that the song is gaining traction, especially during this Independence month,” said Masekesa.

The track is available on leading digital platforms including YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, and VibeTunes.

The single was recorded and produced by Joseph Makiwa at JM Records in Mutare.

It features celebrated veteran guitarist, and dendera artiste, Lameck Mutero on lead and rhythm guitars, while Masekesa himself contributes bass guitar and lead vocals.

Makiwa rounds out the trio, handling the drums with precision.

Beyond the studio, Masekesa recently brought his sound to the stage, performing two tracks as the opening act for Tryson Chimbetu’s widely attended Independence gig at Rozvi Bottle Store in Dangamvura.

Energised by the crowd’s response, Masekesa revealed plans to assemble a fully-fledged live band—The Eastern Stars Band to bring his evolving discography to life through public performances.

“It is truly humbling. Some things are only made possible by God. To have my single chosen as a jingle by national radio stations is an incredible honour. I am so grateful to Radio Zimbabwe and all the national stations for believing in my music and giving it a platform,” he said.

The track is Masekesa’s fourth official release, following a string of previous hits that have marked his steady rise in the Zimbabwean music landscape.

His 2023 single, Kuzipa Kwerudo, earned notable acclaim, breaking into the top 20 of Classic 263’s Top 50 Hits and charting on Diamond FM.

The song also gained international airplay in Mozambique, where it featured prominently on Radio Chimoio.

Looking ahead, Masekesa is set to release a full album in June.

The upcoming project is expected to include tracks such as Mari Muhomwe, Network, and a reimagined remix of veteran wordsmith and singer Hosiah Chipanga’s iconic track, Zvichandibatsirei.

Masekesa, who is a public admirer of ZORA founder, Leonard Zhakata, said he is, not only preserving the legacy of the genre, but also redefining its future.

With lyrical depth, cultural pride, and growing popularity, Masekesa aims to reach new heights in Zimbabwe’s vibrant music scene.
