The move came after two separate incidents of attempted rape were reported in two consecutive days at Howard High School and Howard Hospital.
Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the campaigns and the two incidents.
“We received two separate reports of attempted rape at Howard High School and Howard Hospital and the suspect is unknown. So far we have dispatched police officers in the area to educate people on the dangers of not locking their doors when retiring to bed,” he said.
The first incident occurred on May 31 when an unknown man invaded Howard High School girls dormitory.
It is alleged the suspect entered the dormitory at around 3am and pounced on a 16-year-old girl who was asleep and grabbed her mouth in a bid to silence her. Another similar incident took place the following day at Howard Hospital where a 14-year-old girl was attacked by an unknown suspect while sleeping.
It is alleged that on the fateful day the suspect broke into one of the staff houses at Howard Hospital at around 3am. He was wearing a mask. A report was made at Howard police base by the girl’s father after she told him about the incident. Asst Insp Masikati said investigations into the two incidents were in progress.
He urged members of the public to make sure that they secure their doors when retiring to bed to curb such criminals from entering their homes.
Asst Insp Masikati also urged boarding masters to put tight security at the dormitories to deter such criminals.
