MASHONALAND continued its dominance at the ongoing Senior National Swimming Championships as they led the medals table having amassed 120 medals on Day Three of the finals at the City Pool in Bulawayo. The competition, which kicked off on Thursday ends tomorrow. Matabeleland was a distant second with a total of 62 medals followed by Mashonaland Country Districts who had 12 and Manicaland had by yesterday managed to collect four medals.
Mashonaland dominated most of the age groups with Matabeleland holding its own in the boys 13-14 and 15-16 age groups.
Matabeleland Swimming Board chairperson Robyn Smith said they were happy with the attendance as 160 swimmers turned up for the event. She said competition was high with several swimmers managing to reach Level 3 times required to take part in the South African Galas meeting.
Mashonaland has 78 swimmers taking part in the championships followed by Matabeleland who have 50; Manicaland has 12 while Mashonaland Countryside and Midlands have registered 11 athletes each.
By yesterday (Saturday), Mashonaland had won 49 gold, 37 silver and 34 bronze while Matabeleland had amassed 17 gold, 27 silver and 18 bronze. Mashonaland Country Districts had managed five gold, four silver and three bronze with Midlands having one gold and three bronze.
South African-based Nomvula Mjimba was one of the top performers for Mashonaland raking in more than seven medals and was in contention for more in the last two days of the competition. Mjimba, formerly of Matabeleland, won a scholarship after posting impressive times last year and is now studying at Wykeham Collegiate in Pietermaritzburg.
The 13-year-old who is in the country on short holiday was ecstatic about her performance and which earned her the national colours’ blazer.
