MASHONALAND West Province have stepped up their efforts of promoting handball in their province by putting in place a substantive provincial board which will be led by Lilian Chiketa.The province’s elections were held on September 6 under the supervision and guidance of the Zimbabwe Handball Federation president, Amon Madzvamuse, and the federation’s secretary-general, Alphios Magiya, and seasoned coach and administrator Alfos Mhondiwa was elected as their new vice-chairperson.
Stephen Chamangwa won the powerful post of secretary-general while Mukai Machivenyika came in as the province’s treasurer.
Virginia Chitambira was also elected as the chairperson for the province’s Women in Sport while the chairperson of the Athletes Commission is yet to be picked.
And according to Chiketa, the new board, which has representatives from the majority of the districts in the province, has the following initial objectives:
- Awareness and expansion of the game of handball
- Manpower development: To raise the number of trained technical personnel by 100% (from 120 to 240) by December 31, 2013
- To develop the game in the province by putting in place viable structures at the lowest level such as district and zonal boards and clubs
- To facilitate local and international exposure for the province’s clubs and athletes in a bid to nurture identified talent.
The Mashonaland West Province has been able to send athletes to one of the world’s biggest handball tournaments — the Partille Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden — twice in a row despite the absence of a viable board.
The Mash West sides that went to Sweden for the Partille Cup in 2012 and this year were a Zvimba district team and Mashrhino, provincial Under-12 girls select side.
Chiketa said her board is currently in the process of putting in place a five-year development plan as well as short-term plans that will enable them to achieve the above objectives.
And in line with the manpower development objective, the board has lined up Level 1 courses throughout the district as outlined in the schedule below:
