Provincial chairman, Zecky Banda, believes his team will be competitive in this year’s event.
“As a province we are geared up for the tournament as we have managed to set up committees that can work with the boys,” said Banda.
‘We have 30 players, whom we will trim to 20, and our age-verification committee is happy that there wasn’t any cheating from the players.
“As Mashonaland West, it is our first time to take part in such a major tournament so we are excited.
“We have been overlooked in the past years but now the time has come for us to showcase our talent.
“We have a lot of talent from the districts and it will be good for some of our players to take part in such events and get noticed.
“We did not have players in the national under-17 and Under-20 from this province so we are hopeful that this will help us expose some players who have got potential.”
Banda said such tournaments were key if the national game was to develop.
“I think the current Zifa juniors’ league board is doing well and I would like to urge all provinces to support these tournaments,” said Banda.
“For football to develop we need to have a good junior policy and keep such teams intact and they will then graduate to higher ranks.
“As it is our first attempt, we are not looking at winning the trophy but to make an impact and have our players noticed as we have some talented footballers.”
