FOLLOWING a successful tour in England, martial artist Wilfred Mashaya is shifting his focus to the World Championships set for October in Wales.

Mashaya returned back home Friday morning from England where he won five gold medals plus the Athlete of the Tournament trophy at the International Martial Arts Corporation (IMAC) English Open Tournament.

“It’s a great feeling to be back home.

“Winning five gold medals is a dream come true. But more importantly, it shows what Zimbabwean athletes can achieve on the world stage as I believe we have what it takes to compete with the world if we believe in ourselves,” Mashaya said.

The event held at York Leisure Centre, brought together martial artists from around the world, including England, Wales, Scotland, India, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Romania and Poland among others.

At the tournament, Mashaya competed in five different weapons categories, Traditional, Freestyle, Creative, Musical and Advanced, demonstrating expert use of the sword, nunchaku, sai, tonfa, and kama.

He is expected to lead a team of over 15 athletes for the World Championships in October.

And the team is already in training for the event.
