THERE is rising concern over an increase in veld fires across Mashonaland East Province, which has now ranked second nationally in terms of area affected by fires.

Districts such as Marondera, Goromonzi, Seke, Hwedza, Chikomba, and Murehwa have recorded a significant number of fire outbreaks, posing a threat to crops, livestock, and livelihoods.

These veld fires are also becoming a danger to wheat and barley, which are almost ready to be harvested.

Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) Acting provincial director, Mr Calisto Masiwa, highlighted the devastating impact of veld fires.

“Wheat straw and dry grass are crucial ingredients for livestock feed. If we lose them to fire, farmers will struggle to feed their animals,” he said.

“If fire breaks out in wheat fields during this stage, it results in significant losses not just of the crop, but also the time, effort, and financial resources invested by farmers.”

Mr Masiwa urged all stakeholders, including A2 and large-scale farmers, traditional leaders, and local authorities, to prioritise fire prevention by immediately establishing fireguards around all fields and grazing areas.

“These fireguards are essential in controlling the spread of fire and protecting both crops and property. Everyone must take responsibility,” he said.

“If you see a fire, act immediately. Delayed action can result in bigger losses. Early intervention is key to protecting lives and resources.”

The province has launched awareness campaigns targeting farmers and rural communities, urging vigilance throughout the fire season.
