Mashonaland West records 237 new malaria cases, four deaths

MASHONALAND West Province recorded 237 new malaria cases in the second week of this month, bringing the total cumulative number of cases recorded since January 1 to 416, according to the latest Malaria Outbreak Situation Report.

The outbreak has also claimed four lives, with three new deaths reported during the week, two in Zvimba District and one in Makonde, resulting in a case fatality rate of 0,96 percent.

According to the report seen by Zimpapers, Hurungwe district remains the worst affected, recording 86 new confirmed cases, followed by Makonde (72), Zvimba (41), Sanyati (16), Mhondoro Ngezi (14), Kariba (7) and Chegutu (1).

Health authorities report that five children under five and four pregnant women were among those newly infected.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has intensified surveillance, larviciding, case management training and community awareness campaigns, urging residents to seek early treatment and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
