THE ROTARY Club of St John’s Northwest in Canada in partnership with Matopos Rotary Club yesterday donated medical equipment worth $100 000 to Tshelanyemba Hospital in Kezi, Matabeleland South. Medical equipment that was donated includes new operation beds, lights, beds, dentist chairs, wheelchairs, crutches, bed side tables, bandages, and various drugs.
The hospital run by the Salvation Army Church was facing challenges, failing to adequately offer medical services to the community.
The situation had seen patients from Tshelanyemba village travelling 40 kilometres to Maphisa District Hospital in search of services.
“The reason why we are helping this hospital is because it needs a lot of medical equipment which has been lacking and this is our fifth trip but a lot still needs to be done,” said Mrs Linda Rowde from Canada.
In an interview with Sunday News one of the doctors at the institution expressed gratitude to Canada and Matopo Rotarians. “We thank the Rotarians for what they have done. They have removed the burden from our shoulders. All the donations will cater for every patient and those who cannot afford to pay required medical fees,” said Dr Nyasha Murizikazhi.
Matopos Rotary president Mr Simon Moyo said they have a number of areas of focus. “Our areas of focus are maternal health, water and sanitation. We were invited by the Canada Rotarians to partner with them so that we assist the underprivileged and to renovate the hospital,” said Mr Moyo. The Rotary club will donate learning material next week to schools in Tshelanyemba.
