Gospel powerhouse Dorcas Moyo is gearing up to launch her latest album, Mugeri Tsvatu, in her home province of Manicaland, an event set to feature one of Zimbabwe’s most star-studded line-ups in recent memory, uniting musical greats across genres and generations.
Scheduled for September 6 at the Manicaland Showgrounds, which can hold over 5 000 people, the launch is expected to be a vibrant celebration of music and unity.
The gospel diva has roped in some of the country’s most iconic names, spanning gospel, sungura, Afro-jazz, and Zimdancehall. Among the headline acts are sungura legend Alick Macheso, gospel titan Mai Charamba, Hosiah Chipanga, Leonard Zhakata, Sulumani Chimbetu, Fungisai Zvakavapano, and Blessing Shumba. Joining them are Mathias Mhere, Mai Mukanganwa, Mai Anderson, King David, Tinashe Murigo, Caroline Chidzikwe, Cloris Machuwaire, and social media sensation Madam Boss.
Adding to the cross-genre flair, Afro-jazz sensation Mbeu – frontman of Mhodzi Tribe – is expected to deliver a captivating performance, further broadening the musical appeal of the event.
“We’re working around the clock to make this one of the biggest events in the province and the country at large,” Moyo told Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub.
“The preparations are in motion and, come August, everything will be locked in. We’re confident of delivering something special.”
Thematically, Mugeri Tsvatu continues Moyo’s unique artistic exploration of hair and identity, a thread seen in her past albums like Bvudzi Rangu Ramera, Mhanza Haisekwi, and Mvere Dzabvepi. Tracks such as Wodalitsika, Kazevezeve, Mugeri Tsvatu, and Jerusalem will form part of the album’s highly anticipated discography.
“We’re planning to shoot videos for at least 50% of the album. The songs are still being finalised, but we already have a few that are solidly in place.”
Beyond music, the launch is a celebration of artistic unity, with Moyo highlighting the importance of connecting different genres and generations.
“Our relationships with fellow artistes made this line-up possible. We value diversity and wanted a line-up that reflects Zimbabwe’s rich musical tapestry.”
Moyo’s catalogue includes Mhanza Haisekwi (2023), Bvudzi Rangu Ramera (2022), Bvisai Marara (2021), PaMarah Tapfuura (2020), and Ndibatsirei Mwari (2020). – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
