MASVINGO City Council has assured residents that it has enough water chemicals and always gets assistance from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority in case of late deliveries from its suppliers.
There have been reports that the council was running out of key water treating chemicals such as Aluminium Sulphate resulting in residents drawing untreated water from their taps.
Speaking to journalists during a Press conference at the Civic Centre recently Mayor Councillor Collen Maboke said the local authority has never failed to treat water at any given time.
“The quality of our treated water is closely monitored by professionals in order to ensure that it meets the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Standard Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) standards.
“The first stage of monitoring water quality is done by our engineering department through laboratory tests which inform them on the level of chemical dosage.”
Periodically, he said, engineers also take samples randomly across the city and check on the quality of water at the consumer end.
“The city health department also carries routine laboratory test to monitor the quality of the treated water being supplied to the city. Masvingo city also takes samples of raw water and treated water and sends to accredited laboratories once every month in order to monitor the water quality in terms of chemical and bacteriology parameters.”
He said the city was among the three local authorities in Zimbabwe that supply clean, safe and treated water together with Bulawayo and Mutare.
“This is supported by documented evidence. It is with deep concern that I have read some articles in some sections of the media and some social media platforms that the City of Masvingo recently pumped ‘untreated’ water to the residents,” he said.
