Masvingo City Council has expressed concern over rampant vandalism of boreholes drilled in high-density areas to ease water shortages, amid reports that seven boreholes have so far been stripped of critical parts.
The local authority drilled 12 boreholes in almost all residential areas to augment water supplies and cushion residents in times of crisis.
Masvingo city Engineer Mr Tawanda Gozo said there was a worrying trend of increased vandalism of boreholes in high-density suburbs. He appealed to residents to report any cases of vandalism on boreholes that were handy in times of water crisis.
“Council is concerned with the rate at which the boreholes in high density suburbs are being vandalised,” said Eng Gozo.
“Seven boreholes have so far been stripped. Vandalism is rife in Mucheke high-density suburb where council drilled 12 boreholes during the 2002 drought.”
