Masvingo close to sealing $60m loan deal

George Maponga in Masvingo
Masvingo City Council is close to sealing a $60 million loan agreement with China’s Export and Import Bank to finance phase 2 of the water augmentation project that seeks to ramp up water supply and end shortages in the country’s oldest town.

The planned water augmentation project will double water pumping, purification, conveyancing and storage capacity from the current 30 megalitres to 60 megalitres.

It is touted as a panacea to debilitating water woes that have been afflicting Masvingo City forcing some suburbs to go for many hours without water daily.

Town Clerk Mr Adolph Gusha said his council was finalising paperwork required before China Eximbank releases the money.

He said expectations were that the project would kick off soon.
