THE Masvingo City Council has embarked on a $10 000 street light rehabilitation project in a bid to restore lighting in the Central Business District, an official said. In an interview after his maiden full council meeting, the caretaker council chairperson, Mr James Mazvidzwa said the local authority was committed to helping the police keep criminal elements at bay.
The caretaker councils took over after term of office of all councillors throughout the country expired on 28 June.
“The council has embarked on a project to rehabilitate all street lights in the city. We have committed more than $10 000 towards this project as we seek to discourage criminal activities,” he said.
Many streets in Masvingo are without streetlights after they were vandalised.
Mr Mazvidza who is also Masvingo district administrator said the caretaker council was working round the clock to improve service delivery.
Meanwhile, Mr Mazvidza said the chaos on commuter omnibuses would be attended to very soon.
Commuter omnibuses in Masvingo had their usual terminus at TM Supermarket closed after the management decided to renovate its premises last month thereby causing chaos in the CBD.
The situation disturbs movement of shoppers and also causes unnecessary traffic jams.
“We are aware that the situation in town is not conducive because of the fact that kombis no longer have parking space. Since the untimely closure of TM Supermarket terminus last month we have not come up with an alternative terminus,” he said.
“We would meet as a caretaker council someime this week to chart the way forward. I think the present chaos in the Central Business District will be over and I promise by Monday next week the kombis would have a new terminus. We have met commuter omnibus operators and our meetings were fruitful,” he said.
