Masvingo cyclist killed by haulage truck

A 35-year-old cyclist from Mwenezi in Masvingo was fatally knocked down by a haulage truck when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle.
The accident occurred at the 154km peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road.Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the accident happened at about 7pm.
He identified the deceased as Boas Matutu.

He said on the fateful day, Matutu was cycling along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road when a haulage truck hit him from the back.
“On the day in question Matutu was cycling along Beitbridge Road. A freight liner truck was also driving along the same road and was driven by Tendai Tio of Harare,” he said.

He said on reaching the 154km peg, the truck tried to overtake another vehicle.
“Soon after overtaking, Tio hit Matutu’s bicycle and he fell on the right side of the road. He died on the spot,” he said.

Matutu sustained serious head injuries, which could have caused his death.
He said Matutu’s body was taken to Neshuro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
