THE Uhuru celebrations in Masvingo will be spiced up by a football showdown between Masvingo United and FC Mabvuku United at Mucheke today.
The two teams will clash in the Uhuru Independence Cup.
Mabvuku United are an ambitious Division Two side who dream of one day playing in the domestic Premiership.
“To us, it’s the biggest honour we have received in our short history,” an official of the club told H-Metro.
“To play at such a grand occasion, on a day which means the world to our country, is a dream come true.
“Our dreams are to one day play in the Premier Soccer League and we believe that we are in the right path.
“This is a journey and every step counts and we are a community side proud to represent our home area.
“We have a rich football history in Mabvuku because this is the home of Brenna Msiska, Joe Mugabe, Collins Kwaramba, Usman Misi and the Mugeyi twins.
“We have to keep the fire burning and we are doing our part as a club and hopefully we will win the match.”
Masvingo United came close to winning the domestic league championship in 2005, under the guidance of Luke Masomere, only to lose the race on the final day of the season.
A win over Dynamos that day would have brought the league championship to Masvingo for the first time.
The club are on a rebuilding exercise.
