THE construction of the 21-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Masvingo Provincial Hospital is on course and is expected to minimise the number of patients being referred to Bulawayo or private hospitals for specialised care.

The ICU is being built with the assistance of the Mimosa Mining Company. Despite setbacks in acquiring building materials it has been established that through donors the work on the provincial ICU is set to commence next week with the main structure having been completed.

Public Works engineer, Engineer Peter Muzite said work at the facility had stalled due to lack of building materials but they have since been promised the materials by Mimosa Mine and were going to commence work next week. He said they had completed about 55 percent of the work with the core structure having been completed.

“We are at about 55 percent in the progress of the construction. The issue of materials was the reason for the stalling of the project but through our resources mobilisation committee chairperson Mr Sternly Kondongwe, Mimosa has promised that by next week the materials that were outstanding will start coming in. We are happy that by next week work would have commenced. The core structure, which is the main structure has been completed. What is left now are the fittings inside the building,” he said.

The province has established Covid-19 isolation centres in all seven districts of the province but patients that require ICU are being referred to hospitals like Mpilo and United Bulawayo Hospitals in Bulawayo while those that can afford go to private medical institutions.
