Masvingo mayor defrauded of $1 250

According to court papers, Nobert Chifeya (29) pleaded guilty to the charge of fraud when he appeared before provincial magistrate, Mr Oliver Mudzongachiso last week.
Chifeya was ordered to pay $400 fine on or before Saturday failure of which he will serve two months in prison.

He was in addition ordered to pay Alderman Chakabuda $1 250 restitution.
The court heard that on 9 November this year at around 9am, Chifeya approached Ald Chakabuda at his butchery at Sisk Shopping Centre in Masvingo where he misrepresented himself as a son to a farmer known as

Mr Phiri of Chatsworth in Gutu who had four head of cattle and was sent to advise him that the farmer was selling the four beasts for a total of $1 250.
As a result of the misrepresentation, Ald Chakabuda indicated that he wanted to buy the beasts. On 11 November he made a cash deposit of $400 into Chifeya’s personal account and later paid him $850 cash.

The court heard that after receiving the second payment, Chifeya disappeared and it was only then that Ald Chakabuda discovered that he had been duped and reported the matter to the police leading to Chifeya’s arrest.

Prosecutor, Mr Tafirei Tandirai appeared for the State.
