The period was characterised by serious economic challenges brought about by the illegal economic sanctions imposed on the country by the western countries that include the US and Britain.
The hardest hit sector was health as it experienced the worst exodus of staff.
In an interview on the sideline of a Community Working Group on Health district consultative meeting in Masvingo last week, the organisation’s director, Mr Itai Rusike said Government should reward its workers who demonstrated their commitment to serving the country by remaining in the country despite the hardships.
“Government should reward such workers who remained behind when others joined the trek to seek greener pastures in other countries. These workers should be rewarded for their commitment.
“We lost quite a number of professionals that included health personnel to countries that had better performing economies that time but there is a group that remained behind and kept on providing their services diligently without looking back.
“This group of workers deserves a thank you from the Government, for their patience. They were working during trying times, especially when there was the dreadful cholera disease in the country,” said Mr Rusike.
He said the health sector remained the most critical area that needed a complete revamping.
“The health sector should be the Government’s priority when it comes to allocation of resources,” said Mr Rusike.
