Some people in rural communities and major urban centres in the province were drinking water from unprotected sources owing to a biting shortage of water. This comes in the wake of four reported cholera cases in Chiredzi district which have, however, been contained.
Masvingo provincial medical director Dr Robert Mudyiradima yesterday confirmed that Masvingo province was on cholera alert owing to the prevailing shortage of potable water in all the seven districts.
He said while the cholera outbreak that hit parts of Chiredzi had been contained fears remained that the deadly disease might rebound in the wake of an acute shortage of water.
“We have placed the whole Masvingo province on cholera alert because of the prevailing shortage of water in both rural and urban areas. People in rural and urban areas are using water from unsafe sources and we feel this heightens the chances of an outbreak,” said Dr Mudyiradima.
