Masvingo Police ban carrying of traditional Weapons

Police in Masvingo have banned the carrying of dangerous weapons in public as a measure of maintaining a peaceful environment.

In statements released by the Officer Commanding Masvingo West District, Officer Commanding Chiredzi District and Officer Commanding Masvingo Central Police District the order started on Monday last week. In Masvingo West the operation will last until 9 July, in Chiredzi District it will go up to 11 July and in Masvingo Central it will end on 11 May. Some of the weapons that have been banned include the catapults, machetes, axes and knobkerries.

“I have invoked section 4 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23 and the provision contained therein: With effect from the 11th of April 2022 to the 11th of May 2022 and declared that no one shall carry or display in public, whether openly or by concealment in a public place or public thoroughfare display the following weapons; catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives, daggers. Any person found in possession of such weapons shall be guilty of an offence,” read one of the notices.
