MASVINGO City Council is seeking about $3 million to repair Mucheke Bridge which links the Central Business District with Mucheke suburb, an official has said.

Town Clerk Mr Adolf Gusha said council resolved to repair the bridge which he said is very vital.

“Our engineers have assessed the state of the bridge and estimated that about $3 million is needed to repair it,” said Mr Gusha.

He said it is risky to use the bridge during the rainy season hence the decision to repair it.

Mr Gusha said the council did not have such kind of money and was considering either borrowing or entering into a partnership with a company interested in investing in the project.

“The bridge has claimed a number of motorists’ lives because it is too low,” he said.

Last December, the car of a manager at a local supermarket Mr Emmanuel Mwale (55) of Rhodene suburb was swept away when he tried to cross the flooded river through the low bridge.

He was found dead in his submerged car, a Nissan X-trail, three days later.

In 2015 another resident from Rujeko cheated death by a whisker when he jumped out of his car at the bridge after realising it was about to be swept away.—@walterbmswazie3
