Masvingo to connect 10k homes to sewer system

Masvingo City Council is poised to connect more than 10 000 houses in Victoria Ranch suburb to its sewer system after getting a lifeline from Government’s devolution fund to build a 7km trunk-line that links the fledgling settlement to the main sewer system in the country’s oldest town.

Council had initially pinned its hopes on a US$2,8 million loan from the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), but the funds did not cover much of the work after the city’s previous council and management bungled and awarded a tender to a firm that was incapacitated for the job.

This resulted in the project being mothballed for several years only to be resuscitated in 2021 via devolution funding by the new management led by Masvingo Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa.

Beginning 2021, council has been committing a huge chunk of its devolution fund allocation to the sewer trunk-line project raising hopes that more than 10 000 houses in the new Victoria Ranch suburb will be finally connected to the city’s sewer system.

Besides the Victoria Ranch houses, the sewer trunk-line project will also allow more than 200 houses built under Operation Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle to be connected.

More than 1 300 housing stands belonging to NSSA and the city council will be serviced after completion of the sewer trunkline.
