Masvingo wants mandatory jail sentence for drug peddlers

George Maponga in Masvingo

Masvingo residents want the country’s courts to impose mandatory jail sentences on drug peddlers to help curb drug and substance abuse in the country.

The call was made during an anti-drug and substance abuse dialogue in Masvingo, organised by the Visionary Cadres Association of Zimbabwe (VICAZ), a non-governmental organisation.

The meeting was attended by Masvingo residents, civic leaders, and councillors.

Masvingo City Ward 2 Councillor Benson Hwata said the Government must impose mandatory stiff sentences on drug peddlers and mules to deter would-be offenders.

Councillor Hwata said law enforcement agents should work closely with communities to identify those selling drugs as they are known by members of the public.

Osias Tadzembwa from Mucheke suburb said the Government and its partners should come up with projects and activities that keep young people busy so that they do not end up abusing drugs and substances.

VICAZ Mwenezi district chair, Mr Clifford Sithole said if left unchecked, drug and substance abuse can derail efforts to achieve Vision 2030.

Deputy Director in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Mr June Mbizvo said the ongoing dialogue between communities, Government, and civic society is meant to find lasting solutions to the drug and substance abuse menace.
