Bulawayo will play host to the annual law enforcement agents sports gala in April.
Matabeleland North have given themselves a head-start in their preparations by selecting a team that will set up base in Hwange on 1 March for intensified preparations.
Last year police training depot, Morris Depot, played host to the sports gala.
ZRP Matabeleland North provincial spokesman Eglon Nkala said at the weekend that they will be sending representatives in soccer, netball, darts, pool, chess and tennis.
“We had our selection competition over the past weekend with all the five police districts in the province in attendance. As I speak our provincial team is already in place and will actually go into camp early next month here in Hwange,” said the police spokesman.
The games were held at Sports Pavilion and Old Stadium for soccer with netball being held at the Lwendulu courts.
The other disciplines were held at the Provincial Police Headquarters.
The five Matabeleland North police districts are Nkayi, Victoria Falls, Hwange, Lupane and Provincial Police Headquarters.
Matabeleland North is likely to do well in netball, pool and chess because other disciplines like soccer and darts are usually dominated by Harare and Bulawayo. Harare’s advantage is that some of its players in soccer will come from Premiership competing side Black Mambas while Bulawayo has some of the best darts players in the country.
It is expected that from the provincial finals in Bulawayo teams to represent the country in the Southern African Regional Police Chief Council Organisation (Sarpcco) will be selected and the Zimbabwean police teams have been one of the regional powerhouses.
In 2009, the team hoisted the nation’s flag high when they came first in the regional games, a feat they achieved again last year in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
